After tasting spoonful upon spoonful of natural peanut butter with an unpleasant aftertaste and mouthfeel, I fell hard for New York Superfoods Manhattan Mud ($8 per jar). This smooth peanut butter, powered with chia strength, offered the perfect balance of chia crunch and chocolate goodness. link

New York Superfood's version of chia peanut butters are free of preservatives and hydrogenated oils and come in six unique flavors such as Manhattan Mud (blended with vegan dark chocolate) Tribeccah Nectar (with agave nectar) and Boulder Heat (with paprika).  link

New York Superfoods Be Kind Nut Butters

From the Chia Chargers line come these peanut butters enhanced with crunchy and nutritious chia (there it is again!). Six vegan flavors include paprika, coffee, chocolate, and agave; and each one supports a charity chosen by the athlete who names the butter, such as Matt Walsh’s Gator Grit (benefitting Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Research) and Laurel Wassner’s Manhattan Mud (benefitting the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults). Better butter, indeed. link

MY NEW FAVORITE RUNNING / ENERGY SNACK: CHIA CHARGERS

By Lauren Johnston - Daily News

Meet the chewy Chia Charger. I received samples of this snack from the CaBara Co. and I'm loving it. I've eaten the bites as a pre-run energy/endurance boost and as a snack to hold me over between lunch and dinner. They pack a great energy bolt for post-office workouts.

Chia seeds are high in protein, Omega-3s, anti-oxidants and soluable fiber, which keeps your sweet tooth in check.

The Chia Charger is about the size of a brownie bite or mini-muffin. Each packs 120 calories (70 from fat) and 8 fat grams and 14 grams of carbs. They are chewy like a granola bar and contain whole oats, peanut butter, sunflower seeds, chia seeds, pecans, walnuts, cranberries, vanilla and paprika - which gives them a spicy flavor. They taste good and more natural than the usual food-in-bar-form. link

On March 27, 2012, our esteemed panel of judges officially anointed the
3rd Annual Next Big Small Brand winner at a live judging and tasting event at BAM.

Catherine and Jason Walsh, founders of New York Superfoods, Inc., took home the grand prize, winning the judges over with their chia-packed snacks. New York Superfoods has an opportunity to carve out a significant piece of the market providing health-conscious individuals an alternative to the over-sugared bars currently on the market. Stay tuned as we keep you updated on the progress of turning this super startup into the Next Big Small Brand. link

SPOTLIGHT ON CHIA IN CEREAL BARS

Submitted on Wednesday, 6 June 2012

By Adriana Michael and Warren Beaumont

In 2010, not able to find a tasty, all natural and nutritious energy bar in the market to boost their energy during a workout, NY based runners Catherine and Jason Walsh decided to develop their own cereal bar with superfoods. The properties of Chia got their attention and last year they started NY Superfoods Inc. and launched Chia Charger, an all-natural bite-sized snack loaded with Chia and five other superfoods sweetened with agave. In less than a year the line has built a base of loyal customers in both the East and West Coast. link

RUNNING WHILE SMILING

Foods I Love: ChiaKindButter

Thanks in no small part to Christopher MacDougall and a brilliant little ditty he wrote called Born to Run runners sure have gone chia crazy. (And while I don't mean pets, the people who brought you both Chia Cow and Chia Garfield are now also bringing you chia supplements and, yes, The Clapper.)

CHIA PEANUT BUTTER! It's a real thing. And I'm really obsessed with it.

NY Superfoods' line of chia-packed nut butters are not only ridiculously, almost unnervingly delicious (what's up, vegan dark chocolate?!), but they're also generous: A portion of the proceeds from each type of butter goes to support a different worthy cause like the NJNY Track Club and the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults.

The taste is unmistakably nutty, but there's definitely something else there, too. In fact, the flavors I've tried (plain smooth, chunky dark chocolate, and smooth with coffee) have all reminded me a little bit of—funny though this might sound—papadums: Nutty (obviously) and salty (though they all boast a dry-roasted unsalted base), they also have a hint of some kind of vague unplaceable spiciness to them, which is unusual and wonderful and the undisputed star of my breakfast table every morning. link

10 Healthiest Ways to Enjoy Peanut Butter

Enjoy peanut butter fear-free with these amazingly tasty yet healthy snacks,
recipes, natural peanut butters, and meal ideas.

By Karen Borsari

This peanut butter is the total package. Not only are the nutritionals pumped up by the health benefits of chia seeds, which include omega-3s, plant-based protein and anti-oxidants (which also give the creamy spreads a great crunch) this chia-infused line of nut butters also sponsors professional athletes giving back to their charity of choice. link
